There is no reason why China and the United States should not have complementary interests in this region. If one looks at the history of the triangle between the US, China and Pakistan, Pakistan has benefited from what may be called poly-alignment; that is maintaining multiple alignments with multiple partners at the same time. Pakistan benefited from engagement with China and, simultaneously, it also benefited from engagement with the US. United States and China both have also benefited from Pakistan having those relationships. I see no reason why such balancing can’t continue. There is no reason why China and the United States should not have complementary interests in this region.
