With the rapid takeover of Taliban on Kabul after the collapse of Afghan government has raised serious concerns about President Joe Biden’s Afghan Policy, because apparently it facilitated the Taliban return to power. However, president Biden stood firm that he made the right decision, and stated in a press conference that “I stand squarely behind my decision,” he also added that after 20 years he learned that there is no “good way to withdraw” from Afghanistan.
Biden stated that the US’ mission was not “nation-building” and that it had already achieved its objectives of killing Osama Bin Laden–mastermind of the 9/11 attacks–and preventing Afghanistan from becoming a future safe haven for terrorists. Whereas in reality, ‘nation building’ was one of America’s initial two objectives behind fighting the war against terror.
While dusting the responsibility of Afghan peace and stability off US shoulders, Biden stated that “It is wrong to order American troops to step up when Afghanistan’s own armed forces would not.”
This clearly shows that America is least concerned about peace in Afghanistan as long as the Taliban abide by the commitment that Afghan soil won’t be used against America. And since Afghanistan does not serve US interests anymore, US has abandoned an entire country of 40 million people to a grisly fate. Though America was never expected to be able to solve all of Afghanistan’s problems, but to leave the country back at square one is a sobering failure.
