US President Donald Trump, now commonly known for his uncanny political commentary, has not only “justified” the Soviet Union’s invasion of Afghanistan, but has also called upon Pakistan, India and Russia to take an active part in the Afghan war.
The US president was talking to reporters yesterday during a cabinet meeting when he made these comments. Trump was of the view that countries “closer to Afghanistan” should take up the fight against the Taliban and the IS, including India as well.
“You take a look at other countries…Pakistan is there. They should be fighting. Russia should be fighting. The reason Russia was in Afghanistan [in the 1980s] was because terrorists were going into Russia. They were right to be there. The problem was it was a tough fight. And they literally went bankrupt. They went to being called Russia again, as opposed to the Soviet Union. Why isn’t Russia there [now]? Why isn’t India there? Why isn’t Pakistan there? Why are we there and we’re 6,000 miles [9,656 kilometers] away?”
